You will probably come across countless colorful photos and dive shops all offering what seem to be very similar experiences. Some emphasize beautiful underwater scenery, some highlight their friendly instructors, and many compete on price. At first, you may simply want to find the most enjoyable experience. But when so many programs look almost the same, it is difficult to know what actually makes one experience different from another. Without enough information, price can easily become the easiest way to make a decision. And that can sometimes lead to choosing a program without realizing that it may be conducted in a 1 format, where one instructor takes care of several participants at the same time. There is nothing inherently wrong with a 1 experience. For some people, it may be a perfectly suitable choice. But the important thing is knowing what kind of experience you are actually choosing. Many Discover Scuba Diving programs are conducted in a 1 format, where one instructor takes care of two or more divers at the same time. Participants are also sometimes not given fins because it is easier for the instructor to control them that way. DIVEMAP does things differently. We always enter the ocean with one instructor and one participant — strictly 1:1. And even though fins can make a participant more difficult for the instructor to control, we always make sure they wear fins. So, what difference does this make?
If you've ever tried Discover Scuba Diving, think back to the feeling of entering the ocean for the first time. Your ears may feel blocked, equalizing pressure may not go smoothly, and even a little water getting into your mask can suddenly make you nervous. Even the unfamiliar feeling of breathing only through your mouth can be stressful. In a 1 experience, the guide has to take care of several people at once, making it difficult to carefully watch each individual diver's eyes, expressions, and condition. Even when someone feels anxious, the experience may have to keep moving because the guide is also responsible for the other participants. You may end up being passively pulled through the water, taking a few photos before coming back up, with nothing more than a brief “unique experience” to remember. But 1:1 is different. The instructor can focus entirely on you. They can wait until you feel comfortable and immediately respond if something goes wrong. Once you begin to relax, you finally start noticing the colorful fish around you and the beautiful underwater scenery of Jeju.
A Discover Scuba Diving participant wearing fins may sometimes kick in the wrong direction, and it can certainly make things more tiring for the instructor. So why does DiveMap insist on using fins? Because we want to give you the active joy of moving through the ocean with your own fins. There is a huge difference between simply being pulled through the water while watching the underwater world and actually moving yourself — even if you're not very good at it at first — while feeling the resistance of the seawater against your fins. That is one of the feelings that makes scuba diving truly special: the moment you move through the ocean yourself and feel connected to the sea.
Of course, a 1:1 experience where one instructor can fully focus on one participant will naturally cost a little more than a 1 Discover Scuba Diving program. But when you've traveled all the way to Jeju for a special experience that you may only try once in your lifetime, what is really the more reasonable choice? Is it simply the option that costs a little less? Or is it the experience where you can feel comfortable, safe, and fully enjoy every moment? DIVEMAP does not see Discover Scuba Diving as just a one-time tourist activity. We know that for someone, this first experience can become the beginning of a lifelong love for the ocean. We don't want you to come home saying, “I tried scuba diving in Jeju.” We want you to say,
