Like all diving, diving in Jeju is strongly affected by weather. However, unlike tropical destinations such as Bali or the Maldives, Jeju has dostinct and noticeable seasonal changes. Water temperature, visibility, waves, and currents all vary depending on the season. These changes are not exceptions but part of what defines diving in Jeju. Even at the same dive site, conditions can feel completely different depending on the time of year and daily conditions. As a result, the character of each dive changes, not because the site changes, but because the environment does.
Jeju Island was formed entirely through volcanic activity. For this reason, its underwater landscape is mainly made of basalt rock formations. Unlike sandy bottoms or gently sloping reefs, Jeju’s underwater terrain often includes peaks, walls, cracks, and small caves, creating a rugged and three-dimensional structure. These formations provide shelter and habitat for marine life, forming the foundation for the variety of species seen while diving in Jeju.
Major dive areas such as Beomseom(범섬), Munseom(문섬), and Seopseom(섶섬) are directly influenced by currents that move around the island. Because of this, dive sites may change depending on time of day, tidal conditions, and sea state. On some days, the available dive sites are adjusted based on real-time ocean conditions. In certain cases, diver experience level may affect which sites or conditions are accessible. These decisions are made to maintain overall safety and the quality of the diving experience, rather than to evaluate individual ability.
